OK, so the book itself says you can play Dungeons & Dragons with theВ Player's Handbook,В Dungeon Master's Guide andВ Monster Manual. Xanathar's is divided into three parts. Up front, there are more than 30 new subclasses for players to choose from. They include some vital and popular builds from previous editions of the game, like the Cavalier and the Samurai. But they also include some brand new versions of classic character classes that will liven any newly-formed party. I guess I like it. The fact that a lot of the content in Xanathar's was released as playtest material long ago left few surprises. Using all of those spells from Elemental Evil kind of took the air out of my tires, too.
The Dungeonmaster isn't left out either, as Xanathar's Guide to Everything has new materials and tools for them as well. DMs will like the many random encounter generation tables in the book. Tables are broken up by regions, making it easier for DMs to plan encounters appropriate for their games. The book also includes a section on traps ranging from simple to complex. This streamlined system for trap design along with a number of sample traps can improve a dungeon crawl in ways other than fighting a big monster.
There have been plenty of books released for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons , but there has not been much in the way of new mechanical content. Most of the official supplements have been campaigns and adventures, with new player options limited mostly to additional backgrounds in appendices to those campaigns, in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide , and some new races in Volo's Guide to Monsters Xanathar's Guide to Everything, which releases in hobby stores tomorrow (November 10, 2017) changes that, for the first time introducing significant new player's options, along with a little bit of everything that you'd find in core book extensions - new monsters, new magic items, new spells, and some new GM advice and systems.

In his Guide to Everything, the Xanathar described new avenues of power for adventurers of all types. In his follow-up text, the know-it-all beholder brings you a listing of Orders and Organizations that are connected to the new archetype options presented in Xanathar's Guide.

But feel free to read more reviews to decide, as each book opens possibilities for everyone at the table.

Xanathar's Guide to Everything doesn't quite have it all, but it's a start. As a supplement to the amazing Fifth Edition of the D&D game, it helps refine some of the unclear aspects of the game and ultimately provides options for player and DM alike, to keep the game fresh. The tables can be incredibly useful and Xanathar's wit throughout makes it a fun read.
Elegant Courtier: You'll never beat the bard at being the party face. That being said, druids lack for ranged damage cantrips, so it might be worth keeping. Anyway - it's situational but decent. Levels 1-6 you still want to open with hunter's mark and then tag them with Slayer's Pray. Nothing bad, but not the reason to pick this path. What madman would take this over, say, Sculptor of Flesh? Slayer's Counter: Free attack as a reaction, that causes you to automatically make a save if you hit? Slayer's Prey: Edit: I misinterpreted this ability in my original guide.

Continuing our series of reviews for Xanathar's Guide to Everything, I cover the new spells introduced in the supplement. The characters, themes, cities, factions and history are highly developed to a point where it's possible to spend an entire session simply exploring cities like Waterdeep or Balder's Gate. Famous bard and historian, Volo, authored several guides throughout his time traversing Faerun, making him the authority on matters in the Forgotten Realms. Volo's Guide to Waterdeep cemented my fascination with the well-known, sprawling Faerun city. My introduction to Xanathar through Volo's Guide instantly endeared the character to me, and I even used him in my Tyranny of Dragons campaign a few years ago.
I feel this also speaks to the popularity of the 5th edition of D &D. Xanathar's isn't a stand-alone product, after-all, it's a supplement that requires the base system to play and works with all of the streamlined rules that came with it. In it's own way, I'm glad to see that as well because 5th edition's changes from 3.5 and 4th are very welcome and intuitive and this just reinforces the work that went into it and I expect we'll see it grow with this kind of acceptance and support. If you haven't seen the new edition yet and you've read this far, maybe now's the time to check it out while this thing is flying off the shelves, relatively speaking.
ENCOUNTER BUILDING This section introduces new guidelines n building combat encounters for an adventure. They are an a lternative to the rules in "Creating Encounters" in chapter 3 of the Dungeon Master's Guide. This approach uses the same math that underlies the rules presented in that book, but it makes a few adjustments to the way that math is presented to produce a more flexible system. This encounter-building system assumes that, as DM, you want to have a clear understanding of the threat posed by a group of monsters. It will be useful to you if you want to e mphasize combat in your adventure, if you want to ens ure that a foe is n't too deadly for a group of characters, and if you want to understand the relationship between a character's level and a monster's cha llenge rating. Building an encounter using these guidelines follows a series of steps.

There is a lot of material in the present volume that initially appeared elsewhere. A couple of subclasses were in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, while a great number of spells were first included in Princes of the Apocalypse. Depending on how one sees it, it can be either a positive or a negative. I enjoy the consolidation, and the fact that the totality of the game is still contained in four rulebooks only. Others might not see it that way, especially if they are already using the already printed material for a while.
